Dana B Tatum (she/her) is a film photographer based in Richmond, Virginia. Family photography is her bread and butter. She also particularly loves to photograph birth, postpartum and is a trained birth doula. She is a mother to two young children.
My photographic practice lives somewhere between observation and imagination. Sometimes I'm simply observing and noticing the moments that unfold around me. Other times, I create images more deliberately and collaboratively with my subjects. I employ a combination of instinct and imagination, of noticing what is already there and envisioning what might be.
I work in both film and digital, though these days I mostly shoot film. I'm drawn to its materiality, unpredictability, and most of all the colors. I love the way film renders the world, giving an image a particular presence that feels timeless and tangible.
I'm pulled toward beauty in its many forms, especially where it appears unexpectedly. I can find it nearly everywhere, in the ordinary, the excessive, the awkward, and the strange. I love experimentation and expressing personality through the use of color, fashion, and movement.
Above all, my hope is that my photographs make you feel something. I want mothers in the frame. My intention is for you to feel seen, and for the images to tell the story of your family. I want to help my clients create images that will become cherished family objects. May they find their way onto your walls, into your hands, and under the eyes of those who come after us.
Nothing lasts forever, but why not make it last just a little bit longer?
When I’m not making pictures for families, I am mostly wrangling my two wild children and forever cleaning up after said children. Whenever possible, my energy is devoted towards my personal artistic practice. A long time ago, I went to fashion school in NYC and studied metal-smithing. I love planting flowers in my garden (far too optimistically), fluffy clouds, homemade soup, karaoke, vintage nightgowns and kitsch. My daydreams are imbued with a strong sense of wanderlust and nostalgia.
